I went to BAPP for threaded rod. They don't stock Imperial sizes any more but can order it in for me. The assistant disappeared just to check stocks. 10 minutes later, still no can do, but a 3' length will be £20. No thank you. Then it dawned upon me, why on Earth I didn't ask my brother, who has his own engineering shop. A quick call to him and I'm going tomorrow, he'll make some whilst I wait.

Yeah, commiserations on the Minor especially after all that woodwork, likewise the Midge - I take it that was the recipient of the new clutch? Have you tried chucking a new voltage regulator on it? I have never added up the welding bills over the past 15 years on my Morris, I suspect it must be at the level of a good restored car by now. Mind you probably not as much as the fuel injection bills on the Mercedes.....

It's got an alternator, Hooli suggested diodes but I don't want to start taking it to pieces, especially as alternators are foreign territory to me. It would be a long time before the battery went flat using it just during daylight. I am happy for it to be someone else's problem!

Remove 3 pin plug on back to disconnect electrical.
Unbolt bottom bolt to loosen tension
Remove belt
Remove top bolt
Remove alternator

Reassembly is reverse of disassembly.

Return old unit to ECP to get your surcharge money back

I put a £45 http://MSC.parts alternator on my MGB. Has seemed perfectly fine and does the job. 18ACR is the part number, used on loads of cars around that era.

Thanks but I have a few NOS Lucas alternators, but am saving them, as I don't want to put a good new one on a car I'm selling when it would be useful for the Allegro.

Diode packs often come out with just two small bolts & the new one just slots in, no idea who sells them these days though.

What do you do if you don't want to pay £20 for some threaded bar which might not even fit? Ask your brother to make some. What's better about this is the threads only go up as far as the thread on the bolts, so the gearbox will slide instead of scrape along. What a great idea chaps.
He ordered me bar for 3/8 UNF size.
Cut it into three 10" lengths. I intend to use three to spread the load as its a heavy gearbox and I don't want to crack it by putting too much load on two points.
Then cut the thread, once the machine is programmed it does it all automatically.
