That'd explain why there was no undue wear before I did the bearings. I'll tighten it up tomorrow.

Yes they are tapered which makes things easier. I did it up to the specified torque and it moved quite a bit so hopefully that's it.

I separated the transmission from the engine and cleaned it up. The thick layer of oily grime has no doubt helped preserve it.

One of the solenoids was smashed, I hoped to get the other one going but that was seized solid and effectively beyond repair. Not wanting to take any chances I am just going to order a replacement switch and solenoid. Water had found its way into the operating lever area no doubt from sitting outside and water got in through the solenoid.

Interestingly the other one with complete solenoid - they have a rubber cover over the top - had fared much worse. Water poured out when I removed the side cover, but I doubt any has made its way into the actual overdrive. I'm not using this one first anyway.

The oil had been drained long before I acquired the units but what little registered on the dipstick is clean. I can select all gears and the transmission turns freely. The overdrive appears to be disengaged which is excellent otherwise it would have been a major fault. Now the only potential stumbling block is the rear support member. According to the parts book they differ and I do not have the right one. I am going to go under the car and check what might be different, I think it will be in the support rubber bracket angles if anything, because the holes in the floor are the same just further back to account for the increased length.

That's gotta be something you can fabricate an adaptor for.

The correct support member has been sourced. Not long to go now before I am ready to start the job.
