Morris time. The brake lights ceased to work unless I put extreme pressure on the pedal. Originally thinking this was air in the hydraulic system, successive bleeding attempts (to improve the pedal feel more importantly) failed to effect any change. The switch was now suspect. To eliminate wiring, I bridged the terminals several times and the lights lit up.

Mercrocker especially will know what lies ahead. After removing the wires I noticed the terminals were very corroded so I cleaned them and re-fitted the wires in a vain hope this might be the fault, even though shorting across the terminals gave evidence conclusive enough.

No improvement at all, I set about re-modelling my brake pipes trying to unscrew the switch with a spanner. This furnished nothing in the way of progress, so it was time to break out the big guns.

I braced behind the switch/union with a piece of wood and clamped it down to help stop it moving. My old King Dick soon got it shifting and I fitting the new switch was simple.

I thought I might have to bleed the brakes again but seem to have got away with it; it took a few pumps of the pedal to get the lights to work, but once done they now illuminate at the slightest press of the pedal. Very pleased.

Now if I did anything like that it'd twist the union & snap every brake pipe as soon as the socket touched it.

Believe me I came close. You can see how the positions altered in the before and after pics, and that was when I'd bent the pipes back as close as possible to how they were.

To aid this procedure in future you can get an assistant to put very light pressure on the brake pedal as the union is unscrewed (provided you haven't already borked the pipework) thus preventing air intake as you quickly screw in the new switch....

Until I can be arsed to work out how to fit the Model A Ford electrical replacement after-market brake light switch I have probably said already that I have LEDs and a relay in place to avoid the switch being overloaded and failing prematurely....New ones are shit and I am already on my second on the Cowley in four years. David Manners sells a Jaguar switch which fits exactly and is apparently of higher quality.

Once I get two I will offer one on to you. I was lucky I had this in reserve, bought amongst Humber parts but they are the same switch. You are right about the current draw, as I bridged the terminals there was a lot of arcing and sparking each time. The original contacts would be up to handling this but after such a long time in service I suppose they go high resistance.

I'd lose patience and use my impact wrench on it, in full knowledge of the catastrophe which would ensue.
