Yep mine was an original - 1970 on the H, massive long gearstick, hilarious cable change, plastic dash in the MK3 Ford Cortina style. Apparently some bloke from Ford joined BL to "help" with the interior. He must've brought the plans with him, they were so similar.

Roy Axe I think. Issigonis had really lost the plot by then and whereas his earlier functional designs had shapely forms, the Maxi was purely functional and it showed.

After the fourth telephone call to ask why my order was taking so long, Autosparks have finally confirmed it to be ready, today. So next week the overdrive will be fitted. It's practically ready, all I have left to do is run some diesel through it and drain it, as this will flush any rubbish out, and then remove the filter as that will tell me a lot. I had to buy the special drain plug removal tool seen at the top left, as the filter is behind the drain plug, and the gearbox drain plug doesn't drain all the oil.

If it works when it's all fitted to the car I will be both amazed and delighted.

The scrapper's engine cleaned up well and actually wears its green paint nicely, which has given me second thoughts about re-painting it, though I expect I will.

I removed the clutch and this was resting there on the flywheel. I'm not sure what this is, looks like some sort of spigot bearing and does seem to fit in the end of the crankshaft. I'll have to consult an exploded diagram for the answer.

Aye that's a spigot bearing that probably got knocked out refitting.

That's a lovely green, it'd be a shame to repaint it & make it look too perfect.

Speak for yourself.

I hoiked the propshaft and gearbox out of the scrapper today. Hardest part was removing the multitude of brass screws Moggies have securing the gearbox cover.

Not a bad afternoon's work and a good haul. The gearbox is valuable to me as mine has started knocking loudly in first and reverse; I think a tooth has chipped. The smooth case 'box always was pretty fragile, but I'm hoping this low mileage lady-owner example is alright. On these 'boxes the synchromesh is weak on Second, and First objects unless you are at a dead halt.

Next job - remove the back axle.
