I don’t think they were ever supposed to be 1.8 were they? I thought they were intended as a replacement for the A series. IRRC they should have powered the bini too so BMW had to get that Chrysler engine instead

The K Series, like so many engines - BMW N Series 4 cyl petrol for example - is junk. Over complex, under manufactured by a company not known for it's quality of manufacture. Why would you even bother? The piece of shit WILL go wrong, repeatedly, expensively and with no real cure. You'll still be trying to fix it 40 years from now.

The world of full of cars with good engines.

Well, it's typical BL thinking.

803 ends up as a 1493
1113 ends up as a 1796
803 ends up as a 1275
3528 ends up as a 4552

Even through manufacturing revisions the bigger variants had problems the small ones didn't.

Rinse and repeat, and it's not like they're the only manufacturer ever to stretch an engine way out in capacity and then see trouble.
Usually that happens when the bean counters get in and the workers go on strike.

The 1.1 and 1.4s right up until 95/96 were terrific motors. Everything there after with an open deck is shite, so everything in R3 200, HH-R 400 and onwards. The poor, dear little Metro, sorry 100, also suffered.

The early Land Rover Td5 also had issues with plastic dowels between the head and the block.

They did. There was a reason behind the plastic dowels, that was due to the steel items becoming seized in the head or block. Plastic eliminated this. They just didn't locate the head..

Look no further than the 1.8 in the 2006 on spaceship Civic. Now there is an example of how to build an engine. It’s the benchmark and Ze Germans cannot come close to. Look at all the sorry toss they’ve come out with since 06. N46, N43, TFSI and shit like that.

My mate - who spanners for BMW - has a 2008 RAV4 with 140k and not a single oil leak. And the original battery.

Well at least they were easy to replace everytime the head gasket went then.

No, you only replaced them once. Replacement gaskets come with steel dowels. Rarely were the plastic dowels removed in one piece, they'd either cracked or melted.
