That looks like a great laugh! Are you tempted to get it back on the road again?Scruffy Bodger wrote: ↑Tue Jun 21, 2022 11:57 am Yeah, weight in a 7esque car just doesn't seem right does it? Saying that my early Sprint wasn't exactly light as it had a Cortina front end on it and a substantial chassis.

As a firm they didn't mind trying new things Kids spoiling your 2 seater fun? Take the little fuckers with you lol Mine was my only car for a number of years. It's sat rotting into a field now, it must be 7 or 8 years since I've even seen it, I think it's still there?
I had a moment* in there show car years back. I'd driven it to a meet in the dry but when we went out later the road was wet. I hadn't looked and it turned out the rear tyres were getting near their limit. The back end broke free after accelerating over one of hose grippy strips they put on the road. It went VERY sideways with oncoming traffic. I can't even remember correcting it but it was an interesting* moment, it was running a 2 litre zetec with Jenvey throttle bodies so had a bit of go.
The first time I had my Westfield running, it was damp and I was following a friend to an MOT station.
I came to a roundabout, my mate had gone on ahead and a Mercedes was pulling out with priority ahead of me.
I remember thinking - Ha, I’ve got some power now (I was driving mostly VW bugs before) and promptly put my foot down. Very quickly I was facing the opposite direction I had intended to go with a Mercedes coming towards me with a bloke shaking his hand at me through the window… He was probably right!

Re: WReXless now a chirpy cheap Jeep
Biter sweet memories tbh Great days with a gorgeous blonde seat cover, crazy times driving in ice, snow, freezing fog with no heater, near death experiences, one with an HGV reversing across the road in front of me round a blind bend, Prescott, Curborough etc etc etc.
I'd just spent a stack on it after running it into the floor as it was getting very tired, FIA approved seat, second hand set of Willans harnesses, totally rebuilt 2.1 Pinto with high torque rally cam etc. I was in the process of fitting some 45's to it as the 32/36 DGAV wouldn't flow enough for the spec when circumstances changed. I took it off the road and swapped it for a £250 205 NAD on veg oil as my bro decided I had to buy him out of the derelict cottage we'd gone halves on. It wiped out ALL my savings I'd put by to throw cash at the place, plus had to borrow more £k to get him out my fucking life, it totally wiped me out.
The kit car was the first thing that had to go as I was spending 2.5-3k a year in fuel and earning about 15K, that was before I'd fitted the 45's A shame as the engine had been stripped, dipped and rebuilt by a local legend and had only done about 1700 miles
That situation you found yourself in may have done you a favour in the long run? They've got such great levels of grip in the dry but the fact there's no weight over the rear wheels can be a real eye opener when it's greasy!

You must have been doing some miles to rack up that amount of fuel bill back then!
I managed to ‘daily’ my Westfield for over a year, but my drive was about two miles if I took the long way around. Very different from my 45 minute drive each way today!
Enjoyed the long insurgence weekend, this weekend just gone. Lots of flag waving and general letting off fire works etc.
Treated myself to a drive around the lake in the Caterham one evening. The local fireworks masking the occasional pop and crackle of the exhaust nicely. Doing between 30 and 50 mph on a curvy road as the sun went down was just idyllic. The roads were quiet as everyone was either stuck in an airport, or waving flags somewhere.
I’ve got a little further with the cheap widened steel wheels I picked up.
They now have a couple of coats of primer and a couple of coats of farm implement enamel on them. Judging by the runs on them, I think they were painted by Stevie Wonders blinder mate Kev last time. The enamel started out a bit lighter than I was hoping for. They look more like sealed alloys now (though picking them up you instantly know they arent alloy!) Much lighter silver colour than the stock space saver, which is the colour on the can lid but not on the first pass spray.
Second coat seems to have brought the colour down a little. I left the enamel too long between coats and sanding down some of the scratches and chips needed some pretty aggressive paper! The stuff would last a direct nuclear strike I think!
Second coat. A friend has offered to put the tyres on for me today, so I’m not sure if I have time for a third layer of paint or not…

Re: WReXless now a chirpy cheap Jeep
I managed to pick up 4 tires from a local race forum for $50.
They are super sticky tires that have had the edges rubbed off due to high camber and harsh driving.
For $50, they will let me see if I have any hope of fitting them to the 912 and might even see duty, as it’s not exactly a camber monster with huge power… These were actually on a Miata / MX5 before and got that scrubbed driving around an AutoX track.
I’ve also been talking to a guy who paints VWs (beetles / ghias etc) about painting the 912 for me. Back to metal, he thinks it will probably take 10 to 12 months of messing… waiting now for a rough quote.

Re: WReXless now a chirpy cheap Jeep
Back in April, I bought a used rear bumper half on line for $100.
The seller messed me around for months and after asking for my money back (though the bumper being $400 for a new pattern part being a less desirable offer) finally got the part sent, along with a ‘you owe me $52 for shipping text’.
So I’ve started to strip it down and clean it up. Started with power washing and then oiling connectors and now stripping down. Still a way to go. Needs sanding next. Not sure whether to just use the hanger - pro, the bumper colour would still match / con the new one is welded on so would need some work
Or
Use the whole ‘new’ assembly - pro, it should be straight and I won’t risk messing it up by cutting and welding / con completely the wrong colour (but the whole car will eventually get resprayed) and it’s not worth trying to match the cars current blue paint colour.

Re: WReXless now a chirpy cheap Jeep
Another face meltingly hot day today.
After yesterdays 8 hr drive to the Iowa skate park, I thought I would keep it local.
There was a Street Machine car show about 25miles away, so the little ‘un and I got up early (for a weekend) and set out for a looks see, before it got too hot. As it was, it was in the mid 80s and humid at 8:30am.
Lots of fun cars to see, but again with the US, so many that you eventually lose interest.
A couple of real peaches (to me) and they were both Nash cars.
This little Metropolitan was very much a 90s style ca, but nicely detailed with air bags, suicide doors and interesting engine. The other isn’t really my style either, but amazingly finished and quite cute. The nice thing about this show, is the variety, though I wish there were a few less muscle cars. Here are some more pics pulled at random. I seem to have an iPad issue. Will try a few more later!

Second try!
The Pontiac Fiero had a corvette motor in it and was sitting next to a rat Rod Willys pickup. Such a great mix of cars (but too many new Corvettes).
The MR2 mk1.5 had a v6 transplant. And if that wasn’t enough, it was supercharged, so probably close to an unstressed 300bhp!- Hooli

The General Lee still looks good, that is how all yank cars are in my head.
