:!: I bought this little car from motorpunk on the beige. He'd owned it for 16 years but had been left in garage for the last year and a bit. I gave £750 for it, and I had world of ceri deliver it from Leicester up here to North Shields for another £250. So I had an unloved car with no mot sat outside with deflated tyres and looking rather rough for £1000.

I blew the tyres up and took it for a blast. It drove spot on and surprisingly the brakes and handbrake was also good.
I took it for an mot the next day and it passed 1st time with no advisories. Winner! Insurance is next to nothing on these and footman james charged me £150 for a years cover. Not bad as it was a new policy and it lives on the street.
It wasn't in bad nick but the drivers door and rear arches were starting to go. It had had new wings a few years ago but it was starting to get a little frilly around the edges. Not bad considering how bad these fuckers rot.

I replaced the door with one I bought from Gm on the beige from a donor car he was breaking to make his kit car the exocet. I set about fitting it and it was fairly painless. About five months on I still haven't got round to swapping the lock barrel over and I'm still getting access from the passenger side.

I drove it around for a few weeks like that and I was loving it. It's all poly bushed with powder coated subframes and coil overs. At the time it was wearing a recent set of proxes and it literally handles like a go kart. The stance is quite low but it doesn't catch on anything and the coil overs are set for maximum height anyway.
Motorpunk is a motoring journalist and did a detailed write up of the 80 hours of welding and work underneath.
It's quite a famous little car and has been to Europe a few times including laps of the Nurburgring and quite a few tracks over here.
Here's a link to all the work it's had.

They are nice little things, I tried one once and couldn't get comfy, from talking to people with them it sounds like the one I tried was broken.

It must have been. Theres a trick where you remove foam from the seat base and back which makes it into a bucket seat. I'm trying to keep this one standard though.
You're welcome for a blast if you're ever up this way.

Here's a video of it in action where he compares it with the mk4.

The one I tried had the seat base tilted so far back it felt like my knees where level with my shoulders, I couldn't find an adjuster for it anywhere.

Which has oddly just reminded me, I've sat in two. The other one was comfy, but it was for playing Ridge Racer in the Trocadero, London. That was £5 a go back 20 odd years ago, I obviously only did it once. I can't find pics of the London one, but here's the Blackpool version if you ever need somewhere to rob for rust free parts. It looks slightly different as the London one still had the windscreen fitted.

How do you value MX-5s? Prices are all over, but I presume that's because of the rampant rot? I'm a MGF/TF man, but a change is as good as a rest. It just seems like I'm swopping HGF for rust. I've always found the MGF the more comfortable car, but I'm prepared to sacrifice my comfort. A bit.

I've had both and this is my 3rd one of these. The vvc mg was a fair bit quicker but these are a better drive imo.
