Bet all those '59 Chevys have been scrapped :-(. I know I am biased but I just love them for some reason. My Corgi Toys police car was one of my favourites when I was young so perhaps that planted a seed. A RHD survivor has recently come to light still with its original plate 3DUP. Hopefully somebody will take it on and restore it but I'n not holding my breath.

I guess other people will be having the same issues I have where there’s so much hate for RHD yanks amongst 99% of the Yank car “scene” it’s a bit crazy spending out on a restoration.
If I won the lottery I’d pay to have mine put back to original but justifying a resto cost of double the final value otherwise would be hard (even if I could find the cash)

I would prefer RHD and would question whether anyone disliking it was serious about using their car. The RHD drive versions as you know were not half-arsed conversions but done properly in the factory with RHD dashboard etc
I don't know anything about the UK yank scene but am quite sad to hear about this snobbish element.

It’s not the only one - I went to a yank car show at Billing once not long after I bought the Chevy. Got chatting to a blocke with a similar car until his mate point blank told me he only reason I hadn’t brought mine was because it was raining. Twat.
I generally stay away from them now.
It was the one if he reasons I fell out with Rods n Sods too.
A lot of them seem to have a very narrow definition of what’s an acceptable yank so they can fuck off.

There are a lot of Rambler, Studebaker and Valiant haters amongst that crowd too. Likewise the anti-straight 6 brigade "cos ain't proper Yank". Funny how most of 'em seem content to drive round in eurotrash for most of their lives and only able to take the proper car out if they are organised into rallies, cruises or club nights.

Worst offenders are those with the stuffed children crying into the radiator grille or fucking toy leopards everywhere....WTAF?

Hah so you've been to Billing back in the days when it wasn't too bad? I have to boast that both my '61 Impala bubbletop and the '59 have won 'Best Chevrolet':-) For what that's worth. I've had Murican cars since 1976, think I've met most of the knobs and know it all/know fuck all brigade. I have told some that if they're that bothered by something on my cars that they would be welcome to buy it so they could do their own thing (translates as fuck it up) but strangely nobody ever took up my offer.

Like you I also got fed up with Rods n Sods, so many twats with their worthless uninformed comments on every subject under the sun. My '59 is mine, I like it as it is so I don't care about dumb opinions about what I should do to it.

Oh I've owned I think four RHD cars, 58 Belair, 59 Impala, 66 Galaxie and 68 Chevelle wagon. Loved them all.

Funny, yes. There's a very Lennon's Glasses approach to Americana in the UK. A lot of the image is stymied by the movies but in truth the straight six is as an American classic as the V8, just the 8's were easier to bring up in displacement while remaining more compact.
Yes, the offbeat exhaust note of a V8 sounds nice but in truth an 8 should have a smoother sound than a 6 but the exhaust system doesn't allow for it.

So no, people here don't go for the sixes either because they are usually the smallest of all the engine choices but they were, at the end of the day, often utterly bulletproof and the baseline bread and butter of all the vehicles produced.

American cars with V8's suffer the Shelby GT350/Escort Mexico problem- there's more of them on the road than the factory ever produced.

Embrace the six. They're torquey, smooth and reliable. Stick a set of split pipes on if the comments get boring. Most untrained ears can't tell the difference between that and an 8, particularly if the note is gruff enough.

Ironically I have no luck finding a 235 stovebolt six here to return my Chevy to original config. I think they have all been junked.

EDIT - that made me look on rods n sods - I missed one for sale in September.

My Rangie runs a straight 6 Perkins with one centre silencer and a fairly big bore system it always sounds well, despite bits dropping off every time it's started....

Straight sixes sound great, my old XJ40 had a lovely sound to it as did a mate's Carlton GSi3000 years ago.
