Ok ya bunch of sarcastic feckers. The car is very nice for its age inside and out so I want to keep it as presentable as I can. I've gone for a change of tact so instead of it looking ropey and not giving two shits about its appearance I've thought if I care about its presentation a bit more then maybe it will repay me in being relatively trouble free.

My 406 ownership experiences have been largely positive although even to this day I still have hard skin on my left elbow after driving them with the centre armrest down.

Mine has the individual armrests. I find driver side one is too obstructive when in town with gear changes so if I'm in car alone I rest elbow on passenger side rest. My armrest only comes down on the bypass or motorway for any lenght of time.

I was nagged for weeks to buy this Phase 1 1.8 petrol when I had my cars wanted for cash advert running. It drove really well and I swapped it for a more saleable late K11 Micra from a guy in Anfield who wanted the 406 to go illegal taxi driving in around Liverpool city centre. There were still a fair few 406s plated for private hire use around the city at that time so the car was ideal for his needs.

I bought this one on a whim after exporting my much loved W124 and being in need of wheels with working air con. I only paid a few hundred for it with five months tax and nearly a full MOT. One stuck rear door and a blowing exhaust were the total of it's faults. Being a late 1.8 petrol with the silver top engine I had exporters fighting over it when I stuck it on Gumtree. It now resides in a place I still call Rhodesia.

Mines a 2.0 hdi in glx trim so lots of toys and nearly all working too. Electric seat on passenger side motor for backrest works and can hear it turning but backrest doesnt move. Strangely it's only 90bhp model so 0 to 60 in 14 seconds which us odd in such an high trim level.

The Hdi 90 was a popular taxi choice.

Are you sure that yours hasn't been plated in the past?

At 140k on a 02 I highly doubt it. The interior isn't worn or shabby and broken in places either. 2

Peugeot down but not out. Upon closer inspection I have a perished aux belt, perished cv boots on driver side and a torn boot on passenger side. I refuse to scrap yet another car so I've ordered 2 new complete drive shafts for 70 quid, luk clutch kit,aux belt and transmission side crank seal. My mobile mechanic is charging me a good rate for swapping clutch and belt. My thoughts are the perished drive shaft boots will only get worse, the holed one will fail mot in February too and seeing the driveshafts are being removed for clutch it makes more sense to fit new. The old pug does a sterling job at ferrying me around and towing the trailer while being good on fuel. Sick of chucking good money after bad keep scrapping cars so I need to persevere.

Sounds a good plan, Bub, you are going to run into that sort of work on anything else anyway.

I've always regretted getting rid if my old mk1 avensis saloon. That was a comfy old barge and the Peugeot has a lot of similarities with its comfort and ease of driving. I'm getting tired of wasting money scrapping cars now and especially with my lad living here funds are very tight ( fuck you universal credit) so it's a case of make do and mend. Luckily in one respect it's happened when I've got a car I actually really gel with. All in all the by February when it goes for its ticket it will owe me around 900 including labour costs and two new rear tyres it will need in next 2 or 3 months. I highly doubt I can get a half decent large car with towbar and cambelt, clutch, driveshaft, water pump, brakes and tyres all done in past 6 months with a years ticket on for under 900.
