Yeah the general public do put too much faith in the age of cars. One of my customers who must be the worlds worst car buyer with his luck just got gifted an 05 Polo. It played up the other day and the text message I got from him moaning about it included the line "I can't wait until I can afford something newer and decent". This came from a bloke who so far this year has had to scrap 2 far newer cars due to major engine faults. He brushed off the 3k he lost in one year on a crap Corsa saying he could of spent that much on a pcp contract per year. As it happened all that was wrong with the Polo was an ignition coil, not bad for a car that hasn't been serviced in 2 years. One day he might finally realise old cars are certainly better than some of this modern shit.

Speaking as someone who has owned both 405 and 406s I struggle to think of anything that the 405 does better?

Not really the pinnacle was as Warren said was in the 90's. Then cars were reliable and easy to repair. Putting ecu's in in hostile environments is not a good idea. What is the point of dual mass flywheels ? DPF filters ? and half the electronic bollocks they put on cars now. Can bus and stop light bulbs that use variable voltage rather than 2 filaments. Things worked but they have to keep pissing about in the name of progress.

A lot of the electronic and mechanical failures are down to the government constantly bringing out stricter emission regulations.
I can't wait to see the price of an audi rear light unit when the posh indicator fails. I bet you can't just change the bulb.

I agree about the 90s as by then they were rustproofing the cars properly as well so you didn't have holes in the front wings at 2 years old.

405 and 406 a very different cars. I've some pictures somewhere of my old 306 estate next to a 405 estate and they're almost exactly the same size, and they drive comparably. The 406 is a barge in comparison. I know which I'd rather sit in for ten hours with the cruise set to 130 though.

I had a 405 saloon many moons ago,dad had a few too. The decent ones are now out if my price range. Good thing is with the 90bhp hdi is it doesn't have a dmf,dpf,coded injectors,variable geometry turbo and all the other crap. ECU and bsi isnt in silly places prone to water either. Bonus is as well I've got lexia/Peugeot planet so can do more in depth investigation if it did decide to go french electronically. Mines not long rolled around to 145k too,was on 138 lk when I bought it in june.

You mean them strobing indicators? I've seen a few now where the indicator flashes 2 different parts of the indicator alternately. Maybe that's what happens when the strobe function fails.
