Talk about your cars etc here. Keep it sort of sensible and on topic please.

Air con regas?

Post by DodgeRover »

Is anywhere doing regassing with a colder or your money back guarantee any more?

The air con doesn't work on the Maverick and it would be nice if it did but I've no idea if it just wants gas or its actually faulty,..

Kwikfit. Or they did anyway.
They spent an hour recently trying to regas my v70. Wouldn't hold pressure on the test so they didn't charge me for the attempt.

Halfrauds used to do the same didn't they?

I might get the XJR done, it works but it gurgles at times & I think it should get colder quicker.

Right we've got a Kwik fit that are local and open. What happens if it holds a vacuum they fill it and it doesn't cool do they empty it again?

Have no idea how long this system has been empty for so I'm not over optimistic

Afaik they vacuum it and see if it holds a vacuum (i.e. no leaks). If it does leak they'll stop there as not legal to fill a leaky system. They then put the refrigerant in and see if it works. I imagine they'll leave the gas in at this point if it doesn't work, otherwise they'll have to pay for gas disposal too.

Cool was hoping that was the case so I've got a chance to fix it if it is a clutch or something

Air con regas?

Easy enough to recycle the gas as the machines do it automatically. A former friend (thieving twat) used to pay the scrappy a few quid to go hoover the gas out of cars into empty bottles. It literally doubled in price overnight so it was quite a lucrative move for him.

Most re gas efforts aren’t putting a full load in rather the machine clears the old stuff, separates the oil and water and bangs the recovered refrigerant back in the tank.
Just when I thought I was out they dragged me back in.

All breakers do that now. My local BMW place saves all the refrigerant from breaker cars - it doesn't deteriorate so it's not like reusing brake fluid. It's superb recycling IMO.
After gassing, you'll need to examine all the joints where the pipes fit into the compressor, evaporator and condenser. The O rings can fail and a tiny leak that's not enough to cause an immediate pressure loss will lose half the refrigerant in a week.
The problem with those shitty Halfrods regas arsesol cans is that they don't vacuum the system. Therefore all the moisture stays in, freezes and causes a blockage.

The price of R134 went through the roof a couple of years ago so I am sure they will reclaim it as I know I would. I expect most places will do the deal where they only charge if they fix it. The whole job is just automatic so it doesn't really cost anything to do as you just hook the machine up and leave it to it. As long as it holds vacuum you can fill it and test. I really should buy another bottle of gas soon as my machine is empty and the Bentley is low on gas. It was a nice little earner but when the gas price quadrupled overnight that took the shine off it somewhat.
