Great to hear it's running, I'd love one of them one day.

I do love that red/burgandy colour and I would rather that than all these bland colours most manufacturers pump out these days.
Why do I suddenly feel the need for a big posh barge now, more pics please

Re: How to buy a car in the lockdown
I just noticed it has been over a month since I last did anything with the Bentley. I went out for a ride round in it yesterday and it is still doing everything it should so time to fix the last little bits. I stripped down one of the rear doors to find out why the windows don't work and found the plastic drive had fallen to pieces. They have a small plastic dog gear between the motor and the plastic drive gear on the lift chain. They are designed to fail and protect the rest of the systen if the window jams. According to flying spares they are a consumable part so I ordered 4 of the buggers and also a set of front pads as they had been an advisory for the last few mot's. Ordered yesterday afternoon and delivered this morning by 10. I doubt I will have time today but will sort it all out over the weekend and try to do some photo's.

Re: How to buy a car in the lockdown
I'm sure in the old days they would probably have been made in brass or bronze and the window wouldn't have jammed anyway

The old shadows had a much stronger design but would probably break your arm before jamming if you got it stuck in the window. The newer ones use a much smaller chain and these plastic drives to break before the window chops your arm off.The doors don't seem to rot either as I think they are ali, at least the skins are.

Re: How to buy a car in the lockdown
Wasn't there a few cases quite a few years ago where kids were killed by getting their heads trapped when leaning out and also on the window switch. I think that this resulted in some legislation, partly about sensors to return it if it encountered too much resistance but also, I think, about having a frangible link in the mechanism.

Re: How to buy a car in the lockdown
I'm sure I've seen, on a 2 door Shadow, a mechanism that was geared to hesitate at finger-pinching gap between window and door before fully closing.

Re: How to buy a car in the lockdown. Bentley Turbo R
Well today I finished off the last odd bits on the Bentley, so there is no more to do list just use and enjoy. First up was the rear electric windows. The motors were working but the glass didn't move. The little drive bushes are rubber and disintegrate over time. Door panel off and the motor is easy to get to.
The chain was a bit tight on some of the links so a good soak in WD40 then greased it before reassembly.
Same thing on the other side then it was time to look at the front brakes. They had been advised 3 years running on the mot so I thought I better do them.
All pretty straightforward really just one pad slightly stuck in a caliper and that was it. The brakes actually feel better now so some good has been done.1939 Hotchkiss 864
