Probably didn't auto-renew and didn't read their post. Went to check the insurance policy and had a OH SHIT moment.

Why would they insure the car after the accident and not before, if they wanted to commit insurance fraud?

Maybe the insurers cannot be certain of the time of the accident in some cases?
I don't know enough about modern telematics to say but on all of our cars we'd have to inform them unless the police etc. got involved at the time.
