Was the Mitsubishi Starion really supposed to be Stallion?
Or just an urban rumor?

I read somewhere that it was a combination of the words 'star' and 'orion' which kind of matches the words Mitsubishi were using for engines and suchlike at the time

I used to think it was mis-pronounced as I assumed the car was named to fit in with Colt and possibly to run against, or provide a counterpart to the Mustang. However they've had 30 years to come up with more plausible explanations so I suppose we will never really know....

I read that as well. Alternatively it may be that it actually makes sense in Japanese but loses something in translation.
