They came up with some really odd names by taking the first syllable of each word, in the same way you could in Japanese; however in English that doesn't always tally as to the structure or even the word they're trying to mimic.

For instance, the Fu-Qu would be ideal in their logic. The Future Quest.

Hey man. What's that car you're driving?
A Toyota Fu-Qu.
No need to be like that, I was only asking...

If I had noticed that bit of wankery I would never have bought one.

Took me years to find out why the MK2 Mr Two had Zogativ written on the back. It was an utterly wank font saying 2.0gti

I hate those type of hard to read fonts with a passion, I was once asked what I thought to a job somebody else had signed up, very pretty I said but nobody will be able to read what ever it might say.

Merd!

And amazingly, they have the Toyota Racing Division (TRD) or Turd.

So if they racing division ever had their hands on an MR2, it would have been a Merd Turd!

Many moons ago whilst temporarily living in Australia we, I say 'we' but mean my parents as I was a child at the time, owned a Toyota Hiace camper van. My dad, being unfamiliar, didn't immediately twig that the name 'Hiace' was a portmanteau of the English words 'high' and 'ace'. Instead, he thought 'Hiace' was actually a Japanese word and made up a Japanese pronunciation to suit, calling his camper van a 'Toyota Hi-Ah-Chi'.

The first work van the company had when I was a 16 year old apprentice was an A reg toyota hi a kee. Or that's how I told my mates it was pronounced. Your dad wasn't the only one.
