Careful with turning it up too much. A friend did that to my old ZX Volcane, I took it or a test drive, booted it and the throttle jammed open. It revved to about 30,000 rpm before I stalled it. The car did about another 500 miles after that but each day it got harder to start, then it threw a rod. Careful!!

Aye, too much hassle especially now DERV is dropping like a stone. It's €1.238 locally, and I see pictures of flagpoles showing diesel at €1.20.

Last week it was 10c dearer and a couple of weeks before that it was 5c more than that.

(Pez is 10cpl dearer than diesel)

If the Bosch pump on this is like the ones on Tdi LRs then tweaking is as follows -

The starwheel on top of the UFO - wind it in for more off boost fueling
The fuelling pin inside the UFO - turn it (dunno which way so mark it first) to make it increase fuelling quicker as the boost increases
Max fuelling screw on the back of the pump - normally lockwired to make it easy to spot. Wind it in for more max power

You can also tweak the wastegate to hold more boost, best done before setting the max power screw as more boost means it can use more fuel without smoking like a shitheap.

^ What Hooli said, especially the last bit. Boost gauges are cheap, general consensus on the 306 forum was don't get too greedy so nothing over 18psi on a standard turbo. It's pointless going over that as the extra heat generated will overcome the standard inter-cooler.

Saying that, if the engine has been just run about on shopping duties it may be down on power. I've had numerous XUD's and some of them have been rough feeling and down on power. After a few months of more spirited driving they seem to ease up and smooth out for reasons unknown to me.

It's been run at motorway speeds back and forth to Bordeaux for the past 10 years.

It loosened up a fair bit on the way back from Norfolk where it classed up the local car park a treat. Can't complain at 45mpg, the Eurovan group on FB reckons they're getting that from a 2.0-litre petrol but I strongly expect that to be raging horseshit.

I only just managed 45 mpg from an R plate avensis automatic with 2.0 lump in it on an economy run and they are known for economy. Really cant see it from the 2.0 petrol pug

Yes, I think it's a case of 'foaming groups gonna foam.'

I don't believe it either, but whenever there's a one marque forum/group/knitting circle/piss pot someone always claims mental MPG from their POS.

That is true. I had folk telling me to expect massive mpg from an xud11 2.1 pug 406 estate because of its monumental torque. I really didn't rate the engine. I found the 1.9 overall a lot better

I wish the van had the 2.1 - and I know they came with them. Betcha they're all dead now.

605 has an XUD11 and is probably a similar weight to the 806; while the 605 is quicker, the XUD9 bilk float just edges it for MPG.

305 has an XU5, an autochoke Weber and an autobox. I was overjoyed when I got 30mpg from it.
