MM, did you travel to Bedlington about ten/12 years ago and buy some mini/metro parts from me including one or two hydrolastic pumps?

i'll see if i can find some pictures, Harley one is a 2000 model year Sportster, its the little one with an 883cc engine in an natty navy colourand has always been in the uk, and Harley 2 is a 1989 model year Softail custom. that one has the 1430cc Evo engine and was originally a Connecticut bike. that one is a a sorta plum colour, it was bought by a uk ex. pat who was living in Miami. when he came back to the uk, he brought the bike back with him, and its almost exactly the same as a framed picture of a bike that Kerry has had on the wall since the bike was launched!

the 2 bikes are very different machines apparently, though heavier the Softail does ride lovely as its dot a low centre of gravity. and funnily enough the Softail is the easiest to start. no matter how long that bike is left it will start at almost the immediatly, where as the Sportster is a twat to start when cold every, single time.

Kerry much prefers the softail (i don't ride) andi don't think she'll ever sell it. the Sportster though will be getting put on the road and i think sold in the spring.

i think Kerry paid around £5k for it, several years ago, and that was about half the price of what most of the other softails that were on sale at the time.

i do remember that it was the the only one we'd seen in an age for sale that hadn't been buggered about with and was as close to stock as possible, something that Kerry really wanted, the only thing that had been done to it was that it had a pair of after market exhausts on it that had no baffles in them. ticking over it was a proper window rattler, like very, very antisocial.

so Kerry got a pair of stock pipes from America delivered for £100. now while its not as quiet as a mouse, at least now it won't go upsetting horses, old people or set off car alarms while in motion!

Does being an '89 make it a four speed, ten pin bowling Harley?

no its a 5 speed, and AMF were bought out of Harley-Davidson by a consortium led by Willie G Davidson in i think the early 1980s.

Willie G though was very much responsible for the Softails styling, the real engineering design and development work was done by a guy named Bill Davis way back in the 1970's, he sold the patents and tooling that he developed to Harley-Davidson in 1984 after Willie G's consortium had take control.
