C15 would have been the same as a normally aspirated Visa, I used to like them, would genuinely do over 50mpg, we had a couple, one was £300 from Chesterfield car auctions and the other was maybe £200 out of the AdMag, neither were any trouble.

Exactly, they'll send the £25 back if they can't find the registration, mark the envelope "Clerical vehicle enquiries" and state you think the original record may have been archived.

Regards the astra being low powered for a 1.6,if I recall the 8v 1.8 cav was only 90bhp too As was the 1.8 Sierra. Think yourself lucky 1.6D MK2 Cavalier was only about 54bhp, in all honesty though it didn't feel particularly slow, although the 1.7D Astra with the GM engine did feel a fair bit quic...

You should be able to retain the reg. Personally I would start by just applying for a logbook and attach a covering letter saying it's been of the road for many years include a photo showing both the plates and also one of the tax disc if you can make out the reg still on it. I think given how much of this is now new metal you may well be correct in getting it blasted and a nice repaint in 2k so you don't need to keep polishing it.

I think I may have fitted a brand new Avon on my CB900 before leaving it parked in the dark 16 years, I'm sure it will be fine*, my Dad's Norton handled fine* for a 50 year old British bike on tyres that are at least 25 years old
