The new ones failed about three months later and the garage had to do the job again for nowt under warranty.

I suppose they could if the bearings were worn down.
I had some fail on a fiat ducato I had. They didn't make any noise but the spring would make such a boing oe twang noise now and then when I was parking it. They were seized solid in my case.
