The steering play will be in the adjustable column splines. Get a 32mm spanner on the column nut under the dash and give it a tighten. I put the spanner on the nut, rest the spanner end on the transmission tunnel and heave the wheel clockwise.

That Clubman is a bit of a crossover model - it has the mid 1976 on newer colour and trim, but Mark 3 switches and badges. It might have a solid mount front 'frame.
