CV joints, load is changing when in reverse or braking causing the noise? You could always repack then with grease and see if it helps?
In all honesty I would use it till it breaks though or sounds significantly worse.
Gearbox oil is probably a red herring as chances are it's never been changed before

Do matching numbers count at all in this part of the market? If it's anything like the Britsh bike market, accurate sets of stamps are available, one bike builder was well known for turning out numbers matching specials - which was a bit of an in joke because the numbers didn't match when they were...

I would say an over zealous young MOT man attempting to cover their back should vosa stop it within 3 months and find something he had missed.
