It's amazing what rubbish I remember from reading MGOC mags nearly 20 years ago, but I can't recall how I did a difficult task at work in August.

I don't think they'd be strong enough without a redesigned block to allow for much thicker bolts.

The plastic dowels mentioned were an issue too. They were to locate the head laterally, probably for when the bolts didn't clamp it right as you don't see that on other engines I've touched.

IIRC the LR kit to fix it was a relocated thermostat housing to remove hotspots, a bigger 'ladder plate' the steel plate that went under the block, around bigend height & the head bolts screwed into it. I think there was different bolts & steel dowels to replace the plastic ones as well.
All if the above, plus an updated head gasket. Most garages just replace the head gasket and dowels with the updated parts.

I just want a car for a bit of fun, the Doblo has every box ticked I want, but its no fun.

Was thinking Caterham, but now I am going to have to check out the Elise too.

There is a car show that opened here today and goes on until Sunday, and lots of second hand cars there for sale as well as all the new stuff.

Keep us posted with pictures and prices so we can plan how to spend our lottery winnings...

Have they made you a mod and you're choosing your forum car?

I guess you'll be the one 'responsible' for foreign members and similar like Geordies.

The Elise is going nowhere but up in value I reckon if you can find a nice one. You'll have to pay the money to get one but I can't really see you losing on it.

I love anything Sevenesque but they are ubiquitous.

Bloody Hell, I hope not! Who really wants to moderate the unmoderatable? And I am not in the least bit responsible on anything now (if I ever was).

Prices for used cars here are really breathtakingly expensive, but I can look at cars for sale in most of mainland Europe (where they don't chuck salt on the roads at the mere hint of a frost). It seems easy enough to put an car registered somewhere else in the EU on to Spanish plates (Italy is possibly the exception, as there export rules are a bit mad)

There is only one car to buy when in Spain looking for reliable and fun. https://www.milanuncios.com/venta-de-co ... 889595.htm
Well maybe not that fun as they drink fuel and struggle to pull themselves along at motorway speeds.
