Had this conversation with regards to an AGM battery or not on a E91 and coding. Build list stated AGM fitted at factory.SiC wrote: Wed Nov 15, 2023 10:29 pmWhere do I find that? Try sifting below. I've had build sheets for both PSA cars, but the miserable shites made even the parts section of the Servicebox subscription.

Tbh even if it did say AGM, realistically that alternator charge voltage is still too low either way.

Re: Sics Consolidated Moderns Thread - 2003 Mercedes-Benz E320 Estate
This is interesting:

https://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/inde ... ars.23630/
So my Sept 2003 build date suggests it should at least have been galvanised. Not to say it won't rust nor badly rust, but at least there is a mediocre level of protection underneath. Better than the W210 level that would have even made 70s BL management blush.E CLASS -211 series- saloon and estates: -
All steel panels were galvanised from Quarter 1, 2003, production onwards.
During the previous quarter (Q4, 2002) the process was gradually introduced on the production line and therefore some vehicles were galvanised during this lead-up period, but not all.

Re: Sics Consolidated Moderns Thread - 2003 Mercedes-Benz E320 Estate
Have you tried the online production records? My technofliddery prohibits actual linkage but if you did a specific internet search a person of your savvy should find it. Downloadable and comprehensively notated, unfortunately it was on a Russian website which might now long have been hacked by Ukrainians but there may be a substitute. I found out about it via the excellent Mercedes 190E forum.
There's a great long bar in Rock & Roll heaven.......

Re: Sics Consolidated Moderns Thread - 2003 Mercedes-Benz E320 Estate
I did have a search but couldn't find any more out than the above that you get from the VIN checkers. Presumably they must have a database from somewhere that has each build list per VIN. Or querying the backend of Mercedes-benz.
Even if it had an AGM from factory, it doesn't get around that the alternator charge voltage is too low for AGM and correct for flooded lead acid. I don't have any diagnostic tools that can re-code Mercedes control modules, so even if there is a bit to flip, I can't do it.
Replacing it with a flooded will be cheaper than getting either someone else to do it or buying the tools to do it myself. Given the battery is likely damaged from low charging and also this hasn't done many miles in the last few years (~1k p/a), it's going to likely need replacing soon anyway.

Re: Sics Consolidated Moderns Thread - 2003 Mercedes-Benz E320 Estate
BMW motorcycle owners sometimes mod their alternators with a diode to increase the output voltage from the rectifier. Earlier bikes (pre-2003 ish) have non-AGM batteries, but often AGM batteries are fitted so the ABS module doesn't have a shit-fit due to low voltage detected. Not everything is flipping bits back then.SiC wrote: Thu Nov 16, 2023 11:12 am I don't have any diagnostic tools that can re-code Mercedes control modules, so even if there is a bit to flip, I can't do it.
Or it's a good excuse to buy moar toolage.

Re: Sics Consolidated Moderns Thread - 2003 Mercedes-Benz E320 Estate
Probably accepted that those with retrofitted AGMs won't fully charge them but on a bike there isn't much in the way of consumers to draw down a battery when not running.
With 48 control modules in that car running automotive software from the earlier days of highly networked vehicles, you've got to play by the rules to not have a really bad time. Unless there is a specific way to tell the car it has AGM, I'm not fiddling with the alternator output power.
