I've since tightened the intake and exhaust manifolds; that has also improved idle (who'dathunkit?).

What next? Welding or brakes?

Well, in light of a missing suggestion, I bought a shiny piece.

Nah. But I think I shall add crankcase ventilation, the cleaner pan has provision for it. This engine breathes a little heavily to be left open to vent into the engine bay.

How about venting it into the chassis legs for added rust proofing?

I think that would end up dripping everywhere... The Chieftain already does that and has made a real mess of the driveway.

I must admit I am really warming to this old heap (sorry). I may just ask to swap lives with you, far easier than trying to buy your cars :)

In other news, I now have a working PCV system, which has significantly improved life under the hood.

Passenger Carrying Vehicle.

Keep up Benny, it's Positive Crankcase Ventilation. You know, when instead of dumping out crankcase fumes to atmosphere, you shove it back into the engine to choke on its own waste.
