Talk about your cars etc here. Keep it sort of sensible and on topic please.

Shitty, difficult jobs on cars

Post by paulplom »

A thread for the above.

Having to remove the front bumper on a P2 V70 to remove the headlight to remove a failed bulb. Servicable item?
Didn't someone mention having to remove an engine to change spark plugs?
I remember on a fiat coupe 20v 5 cylinder turbo engine removal was required to change the cambelt iirc.
What about bleeding the brakes on a moggy with the master cylinder under a hatch in the driver's footwell. I had much joy fitting new shoes on mine.

As I have said on here before, this sort of shit (not the Moggy) that the the cunts at the EU should have been onto - given that it's against the law in a lot of the EU (if not all) to drive with a headlight out and some countries even make you carry spare bulbs, why the fuck do they allow designs like that? They should have mandated easy change for all replaceable bulbs ages ago. Also the fucking cunts should outlaw the newer LED headlamp units where a failure of one part of the unit means the whole fucking thing has to be junked, despite 99% of the plastics, metals and electronics being viable. Twats.

You have to take the inlet manifold off to do the spark plugs on one bank for V6 Jags and the similar Ford V6 I think - but saying that, spark plugs last a fuck of a lot longer than they used to.

You have to take the wipers and the scuttle top plastic panels out to change the pollen filter on a Jag S-type (the modern version) - there's a thread about one on the beige.

I hate the modern trend to put clutch slave cylinders in the bell end so you have to split the engine and box to change the fuckers - ALDI, BMW and Rover/MG are all guilty of doing this and then making the slave cylinder out of cheese, the cunts.

Aye that happened on my v70 too. Shared the master cylinder with the clutch resevoir. It burst in the gearbox when I was down Gt Yarmouth with the caravan. Rac picled me up and took me to a local garage for a back hander. Four days later and £1100 quid down I got my car back. If it was an external slave it would've been £70 and an hous fucking labour.

On the big block 8v engines, Vauxhall/Opel routed the auxiliary belt THROUGH A SLOT IN THE FUCKING ENGINE MOUNT. So you need to remove the mount and then split it to do the aux belt. The 2 halves are held together with Allen head screws - you can see how that ends up.

VW Beetle: clutch cable replacement. I’d rather do my own vasectomy.

Going on about Scottish cars,
I had my LS 400 in for a blowing exhaust. He put it on the ramp and I've never seen a more rusty rotten car. Everything was fucking hanging. I swapped it with a young dude from Edinburgh for my mk1 mx5.
The exhaust had been patched loads before and the big Y piece was NLA.

Anything underneath our RX300 Lexus which had lived in Aberdeen, those pictures Drum posted are a reasonably accurate portrayal.....
Honestly if it had been used as a boat launcher and reversed into the sea it would probably have improved it.
