This continues to give remarkable service - recent trips were to the other side of Norwich and back, and then down to Wilton in Wiltshire and back - all on one tank of diesel.

Yesterday I went to (near) Bristol and back in the day and it never missed a beat.

It's as shabby as feck and the bit of the front bumper that had been glued has fallen out at some point.

Last week the front offside indicator bulb failed and it came up as a warning - it also helpfully told me it was substituting the fog light. I looked really odd with it flashing the indicators at normal speed outside (inc the fog light) but flashing them fast inside as an extra alert.

I messaged the seller (off the beige) to ask about the spare key (he said he had one but couldn’t find it). He hasn’t answered.

Well I am back driving at last - got the OK from the consultant yesterday.

During my 6 or so weeks off my mate's been kindly coming over and taking me for a curry and driving us there in the Merc.

Last week he got the Merc version of the 3 amigos - ABS ESP and the other one - and now I can't get the fucker to go.

I know there are some Merc beards on here - I expect I need to get the codes read so am thinking of getting a code reader - any wisdom about the possible cause and what code reader to get?

it'll just be an abs sensor probably, or a brake light switch, most reasonable (£100 ish) readers should be able to read it, I have a 'kingbolen' thing and it's really quite good for the money

KINGBOLEN S600 Obd2 Code Reader,...

I must have missed something. Why weren't you able to drive?

Brake light switch is favourite for causing those problems, even if the brake lights themselves still work! I have had to replace one on each of my recent Mercs and they are mega cheap (about £20) and dead easy to do, quarter turn and pull and they are out. Getting the connector off the back is often harder than the removal.

I have a cheap generic code-reader that I use on the Merc, it seems to work well enough... got a posh Jaguar dedicated one for the , er... Jag and it cost hundreds, and so far, I've only used it once and that was simply to confirm what I already knew (the clock-spring was fucked).

A lot of brake light switches have two switches in these days, the first one to activate turns the cruise control off & the second the brake lights. That was the cause of my XJR's restricted performance & non-responsive throttle the other year even though the brake lights worked.
