This is up for sale near me. its cheap because it has no papers. Most older mopeds for sale here seem to have no documents.

It's a bit more modern, not sure how old it is, as its wearing an odd numberplate.

And it has an expansion chamber! Something to strip, rebuild and paint, and use it around the garden.

How much is that without papers then? If they are still in the £50 price range and you can get it out of the country I'm pretty sure some hipster here would give strong money for it, aren't there some weird rules about what you can ride as a bicycle or something in Spain? I remember a friend out there in the early 90s telling me the only Bultacos he had seen were 50cc versions being ridden without plates

I've never owned a motorcycle before. I fancied some smelly old British two-stroke, and I mentioned it to a motorcycling friend. He remembered one of his friends had this little Raleigh RM1 he wanted to sell. He'd apparently bought it from a neighbour, through a deceased estate, and had had it for a few years but never got around to doing much with it.
It wasn't really what I had in mind, I wanted something bigger than a 50 really, but I showed it to my dad and he absolutely loved it, especially as he took and passed his moped test in 1977 and therefore would be able to ride it without L plates or CBT.
I gave £350 for it. I think that's ok?
My mate is picking it up from Colchester on Sunday, and what I've agreed with him is that he will get it running and give it a light recommission. I have too many projects on the go to consider taking on another dead project. I'll pay him for the work he does on it.
I bought it on the strength of these photos. I've already sourced a replacement for the broken seat. It comes with a spare engine and petrol tank, nothing else and no paperwork which is unfortunate as it's missed the 1983 cutoff date, and the West Suffolk archives have no surviving postwar records at all.

I've found little information about them. Apparently they were Raleigh's first foray into moped manufacture and they were simply marketed as the Raleigh Moped. They were an all British design rather than a badge engineered Frog like the later and more popular Raleigh Runabout.
This is, I believe, the revised RM1c model (C for clutch) which is slightly less grim than the early models. The brakes were both coupled to the rear brake lever but the front brake lever still works to comply with the law.
A combination of the model, and the reg number, leads me to deduce it was originally registered around July 1959.

What do you think?

About no L plates,if you did your car test before I think 2001 you don't need a CBT either. If like me you passed your test afterwards then you only need to do a CBT once if you want to just ride up to 50cc. Full car licence and CBT gives full moped licence so no L plates and can carry pillions if you so require.
Love the little Raleigh. I keep looking at little autocycles and such. Reb and yourself aren't helping matters. Neither is foad too as he has some tasty small machines.

I do like the odd moped and used to reguarly bring them back from France. I haven't been able to pick any up for a while though as prices have become a bit hefty for decent stuff. I picked this solex Flash up in 2018 and should of kept it really. Shaft drive with a rear disc brake. It was aircooled with an extra fan, a nice little bike but not great for hauling 17 stone of fat old bloke around.

The little CB125 was a better job but I sold them to pay for the trip.

That actually proves that it's possible to build a half decent looking "cafe racer" from a 125 without it looking a complete abortion

€150, so little bit more than I think its worth, the seller says it ran when it was put into his garage, so won't take much to get running again. Yeah, OK, if you say so.

Not sure on the NOVA situation in the UK now, but it would be easy enough to dismantle to get it into a car boot. Would it be worth the effort though? I don't know what it would fetch
on the UK hipster market.

It was easy to get the NOVA and registration for my Monet Goyon that I bought in France. That's back in the UK in the safehands of my brother, and not sure if I can import it into Spain as painlessly.
