The 'modern cars are shit' thread.

Talk about your cars etc here. Keep it sort of sensible and on topic please.

A colleague had one. Kept breaking all the time. The last straw was it dumping all its coolant after just pulling it out of the garage to go for a drive.

He sold it then went all out and bought a R8 V10. Said it was the best decision he ever made.

It all comes down to weather you are a big girls blouse or not. Would I own one if I had to ask a grown up to fix it every time it went wrong? Nope.

Approach them as you might a kit car and you'll be just fine.
I watched an Ed China edition of Wheeler Dealers where the project was a cheap TVR, quite a while ago while home working.
It went into the project at ten years old and the MOT history for S17 TVR at the time reads

Advisory notice item(s)

Offside Front Suspension component mounting prescribed area is corroded but not considered excessive (2.4.A.3)
vehicle corroded extensively all over

It didn't look too bad, until the body was taken off the chassis and that was ten years ago, anything UK owned on an original chassis is unlikely to be a pile of good news.

Finding a chassis isn't that simple anymore, the newer model has a carbon fibre frame, oxidising tubular steel seems to be a thing of the past.

How bad can a chassis be that (i ) you didn't spot that it was cocked before you took the hound on or (ii ) is genuinely irreparable? The things were lashed together in a shed in Blackpool so I find it very hard to believe that they could not be pieced back together properly.

Assuming, of course, you wanted to do that sort of thing. But then if you wanted to go to the pub and talk to girls instead of locking yourself away in a shed why did you take on a TVR in the first place?

They are a niche car though. High flying poncy types with manicured nails wouldn't get along with them. The type that takes it to the dealer to top up the screen wash etc.

In what sense?

Personally I struggle to see any utility in owning something that is just going to cost me money because I have to ask an adult to mend it for me when it breaks.

An ex boss of mine had one, brand new 'P' reg and it sounded glorious but fell apart much more reliably than it ran! Smelled of resin and glue (so do/did Lotus) and I really wanted it! He however, was the kind of bloke that had zero desire to do anything to his brand new, expensive car and so was mortified that it constantly needed fettling.

I'd love one.
