I always found they are darn good cars if you can look past the naff styling. Mine were mostly Olds and not Buick flavoured, but I think the various badging is about the only difference between Divisions on these.

I must admit ive always had a strange attraction to the Olds Cutlass Ciera Wagon.
Its the modern old wagon without needing 2 parking spaces and an MPG that doesnt make your eyes water
Mind you ive never really listed MPG as a concern with my motoring...............................

The only reason for me to keep an eye on that stupid OMGMPG bollox is to become aware that all is not well if the fuel consumption suddenly rises significantly.

I regularly got around 26-28 OMGMPrealG from mine (10-11 litres/100km).
The most critical thing when tuning those is the spark plug gap. No, really. Most Europeans aren't used to such large electrode gaps and just install the spark plugs as they come out of the package, which is something like 0.6 - 0.8 mm. However, these cars require a 1.1 mm gap, so I recommend you to check yours and adjust them if necessary. Also, always use original AC Delco plug leads. They are relatively expensive, but quickly pay for themselves if you do a lot of miles. They need to be changed at regular intervals, check the manual. This is another thing that's often neglected by European owners. And finally, these require some very viscous oil, 5W30 or some such, because the component tolerances in the engine are very, very close, unusually close for Euro minds. Using too thick of an oil will not only raise your fuel consumption, but also lead to premature wear. In true Buick fashion, these engines have little to no oil pressure, it's a volume lubricating system.

I can certainly relate to the parts issue, I get lots of bits from RockAuto for my Mercury, parts are dirt cheap and often decent quality too but the shipping and duty doesn’t half bump the price up.
Thanks for the info. New plugs will be going in, I'll let tame mechanic know gaps.
I'll get the recommended oil later, it's cheapo supermarket stuff for now, got to be better than what's in the sump now.
It's been sitting for at least 4 years that I know of.
Looks like it should be good for soaking up the miles on French roads. I wouldn't be so hard on it, these cars seem to think nothing of inter-space mileage.
