Anyone else keeping an eye on the cheap sparks thread on AS? Feelings? More than a race to the bottom? Chinese economy is an enigma (massive lie) and they are marked up significantly from the home market I'm sure but someone needs to make money somewhere? Dumped on us and so a runner? Even the converts are thinking it doesn't add up.

Just watched Rich Rebuilds on You Tube about the price slashing on the Fisker Ocean Extreme SUV. Now dealers are getting shot of them for $30,000 (they were $61,500), and he thinks they will soon be $25k, or even $20k.
Seems they are dropping their prices in the UK too, but not so drastically. Yet.

It doesn't add up to me and Senile Joe has just upped tariffs, although it appears that not being able to claim EV subsidies there is a bigger deterrent. I've read about massive parks of them in places like Antwerp where they've been there for over a year.Scruffy Bodger wrote: ↑Tue May 14, 2024 9:12 pm Anyone else keeping an eye on the cheap sparks thread on AS? The Chinese are now building plants in places like Hungary but I think it's all going to implode unless somehow they can halve the purchase cost or more. The Chinese could do that if the government wanted but they'd just be hit by import tariffs into say the EU. Western carmakers can't, they'd go bust very quickly.
I see the bust up between the European carmakers and the EU Commission exploding. The latter have already rowed back somewhat on the 'Green Deal' so might actually accept that EVs are currently unaffordable for the vast majority of citizens. Mind you their answer would no doubt be massive subsidies if you bought one, the EU way. Where the money would come from is a different issue.

I'll just add another beancounter point.
EVs are expensive so they're easier to sell on PCPs, which can be subsidised by the manufacturer.
Money is now no longer 'cheap' so it'll cost them more or they increase the monthly payments, not ideal when everyone's, apart from Mario's, budgets are squeezed.

A decent article on Axial Flux motors. Yet another old idea/discovery that's been looked at again, yet another invention by a Brit sold to foreigners instead of being invested on by us.
The original Tesla roadster was a great design with the right fundamentals imo, before the new messiah got involved, weight being a known major enemy. It'd be great to see one reengineered with this tech.

There's a couple of videos on the tube too which I've seen a while back, including one with Tim Woolmer in.

"Volkswagen AG’s all-in on electric vehicles plan is no more.
The namesake VW brand, which pitched its ID family of electric cars as central to its future, admitted last week it will need more plug-in hybrids as EV sales decelerate.
This marks just the latest adjustment VW has made to its electrification strategy after the company botched several model releases and fell behind in China, where local brands now dominate. The manufacturer has also shelved efforts to seek outside investors for its battery unit and scrapped plans for a €2 billion ($2.2 billion) EV factory in Germany."

It looks like Wob Forecasting Inc. is not doing too badly with its predictions.

EV's more likely to hit pedestrians? The actual story should be "Pedestrians more likely to walk out in front of silent cars without looking"

Read also drivers more likely to be watching porn or doing office work behind the wheel while on self driving mode.

Apparently there's been some trials and more are scheduled.
I haven't seen the results but suspect that they'll say more testing is needed and the can will be regularly kicked down the road.
I can see it working on motorways but that's all, we're too congested.
