Re: What did you do today?
A wee band of oldies had a day working on a friend's Standard Eight and a couple of Grey Fergies.
The Standard was turning over but no electricity was going anywhere else. 6 volts but it was the positive earth that was doing my head in. I was getting continuity between earth and terminals I thought should be live even with the battery disconnected. Eventually found a broken wire to the ignition switch. Still wouldn't start despite fuel and spark.
The experienced old timers (not me) traced the issue to a lack of compression in two cylinders due to stuck open inlet valves. A bit of careful screwdriver poking down the spark plug holes and turning the engine with the starting handle soon had the valve working as it should. The engine now purred like a kitten.
One grey fergie got a replacement radiator and the other started no bother once we got the choke functioning correctly.
A productive day in good company.
It's my turn next month and I've got lots of problems to fix.
The Standard has a very natty rear blind that can be operated via string and pulleys from the driver's seat

Went to a little local car show in the bx held in a pub carpark. I think it's safe to assume it's slightly outgrown it's location now as there was vehicles parked on the road outside. The bar was doing a great trade in food and drinks and positively encourage the show. Anyway the bx was looking good in the sunshine.

Re: What did you do today?
Got back from walking the dog and the new wiper blades for the Ibiza were waiting for me. Quick rain check (tomorrow allegedly) so as it's had the "take me to the main stealer for a service" light on I thought I'd crack on.
Wiper blades took longer to get out of the box than put on so I decided to do the air and fuel filter whilst my Mrs was out as I didn't need to move the car
Air filter was easy and that little pump I use to suck through diesel after changing the filter. Fuck me, despite that it decided to airlock and stopped then wouldn't restart. God knows why, always worked in the past. Eventually had to wave the 17mm spanner at it and crack open one of the injector fittings and wait for it to stop bubbling when cranking. Went OK afterwards.
So I left it ticking over, bobbed my Mrs's Note down to the local car park (as she had got back from shopping) and went to sort out the oil. I bought a 20 litre drum a bit ago so I started by decanting 6 litres of it into a 5 litre container. Yes, I know, good job there was some saw dust in the garage from my recent joinery attempts.
Spun the car around and.onto the ramps first time.
Yes, I am one of those 'council house' types who write their house number on the wheelie bin with a paint brush!. Anyway, when I did the oil and filter last year I must have had three Weetabix for breakie, rather than the sausage and egg sandwich today. Fuck me was the sump plug tight. As for the oil filter...
Yes, it really needed that.
Eventually all done, left gravity to empty the oil oil into a container. Must go to the skip some time as thats four full ones.

Re: What did you do today?
I'm glad it's not just me who collects* old containers or oil. Last time I did a tip run I took about 70ltrs down in one go. Currently I've got about 15ltrs stored, but need to do an oil change on the HD so that'll go up.

Re: What did you do today?
I've got at least 4 or 5 containers full. Noticed the other day on the recycling website that the local* place only takes 10L per visit. Load of shite so it is.

Re: What did you do today?
Last time I went I couldn't dump the empty containers so had to bring them home, put them in black bags & put in the bin. Oddly enough they aren't allowed in domestic bins etc.
No wonder people fly tip, it's impossible to get rid of some common household rubbish these days.

Same here. Used to be able to drain oil out of them then lob in the general waste. Will actually bring them back and reuse due to having bought the 20l of fresh oil.Hooli wrote: ↑Mon May 20, 2024 4:58 pm Last time I went I couldn't dump the empty containers so had to bring them home, put them in black bags & put in the bin.
