Racer I knew got a new 1983 Ktm 495 and spent the whole season trying to take the edge off the power !
Doubled up on the head gasket and forever adjusting the timing and the jetting to soften it up .
He rode my yz and called it a big fat lump but 10x better to ride than his ktm .

I have mentioned before about my IT 465. I loved that bike apart from the fact it tried to kill you, even just starting the thing was terrifying! It would wheelie and spin the back wheel at the same time and as mentioned above, the vibrations when revving a bit, were enough to knock yer fillings out!

A friend had an XT500, when left ticking over on the side stand it would gradually vibrate sideways down the road

I had an XT500 as well, at the same time! I actually kept the XT long after I flogged the IT (for the sake of my health/ankles/spine) and while it was a tad smokey on the overrun, it was a delightful old plodder. It did have its foibles though and one day, while out with a few mates on the lanes, we stopped for a fag break by a picturesque bridge. Having smoked our tabs/chatted shit/put the world to rights, we re-mounted our ancient velocipedes (it was an old bike day out, we used to organise them quite frequently as a lot of the lads, and lasses, had old stuff as well as modern) and my boots were only on... casually. I kicked the old XT in the time-honoured fashion and the fucker kicked back... my right boot ended up in the stream below the cute and winsome bridge!

I had an XT500 too. Paid a couple of hundred for it in 1989. Absolute pile of shite, absolutely hated it. Vibrated horribly, abysmal brakes, terrible handling, uncomfortable to ride and it's off road abilities (rather than mine) were questionable.
It's the one "classic" bike I have owned that I never want to see again.

30 years on I bought another 24 bhp, 2 valve air-cooled single, only this time reliable, comfortable, decent brakes, copes well off road and can do big mileage trips. But it will never be called a classic or looked back on as fondly as an XT.

I quite liked the XT500. Yes, by modern standards they have abysmal brakes, piss poor handling and vibrate like a jack hammer, but then I also had an IT 465 which could have taught the XT quite a lot about vibration/bad brakes/abysmal handling!

I had a Honda XR650R in supermoto trim. Kick start only, 500 mile oil change intervals, but fairly smooth engine, quick, reliable, comfortable, lokly exhaust note, and would stoppie with two fingers on the brake lever.
Sadly, that won't be a classic either.

V-Twins and big singles will always be my favourites
