I remember back in 1986 a lad in my class called Andy rode a Mobylette from Wirral to Leicester. Fuck knows how long it took him. Another couple of mates rode their restricted Honda MB5s from Wirral to Fleetwood Lancs and back in a day.

My Dad was given a Raleigh Runabout by his twin brother in Lincolnshire. As Uncle had actually turned up on it I fervently believed for many years he had ridden it down. It was much later it dawned on me that he worked on the Railway and simply sent it ahead by their unaccompanied parcel service before jumping on a train himself.

Mind you, the nearest station to us was 15 miles away - plenty far enough on that thing I should think.

Stick a Fine Fare carrier bag over the seat, job jobbed.

I've joined the TDW slowped owners club. I think it's just me and Reb so far.
I've never owned a motorcycle before. I fancied some smelly old British two-stroke, and I mentioned it to a motorcycling friend. He remembered one of his friends had this little Raleigh RM1 he wanted to sell. He'd apparently bought it from a neighbour, through a deceased estate, and had had it for a few years but never got around to doing much with it.
It wasn't really what I had in mind, I wanted something bigger than a 50 really, but I showed it to my dad and he absolutely loved it, especially as he took and passed his moped test in 1977 and therefore would be able to ride it without L plates or CBT.
I gave £350 for it. I think that's ok?
My mate is picking it up from Colchester on Sunday, and what I've agreed with him is that he will get it running and give it a light recommission. I have too many projects on the go to consider taking on another dead project. I'll pay him for the work he does on it.
I bought it on the strength of these photos. I've already sourced a replacement for the broken seat. It comes with a spare engine and petrol tank, nothing else and no paperwork which is unfortunate as it's missed the 1983 cutoff date, and the West Suffolk archives have no surviving postwar records at all.

I've found little information about them. Apparently they were Raleigh's first foray into moped manufacture and they were simply marketed as the Raleigh Moped. They were an all British design rather than a badge engineered Frog like the later and more popular Raleigh Runabout.
This is, I believe, the revised RM1c model (C for clutch) which is slightly less grim than the early models. The brakes were both coupled to the rear brake lever but the front brake lever still works to comply with the law.
A combination of the model, and the reg number, leads me to deduce it was originally registered around July 1959.

Bloody hell you've done well there.....What a find! I'm glad that's gone to a good home. Shame about the plate but at least you can keep that awesome bollock chopper with the tax disc holder.

I got this in the early 80s.
I'll maybe try and put it back on the road this year.

Smashing purchase Angry Dicky,

There must be an owners club that could verify the identity for you?

Or does the 1983 cut off date refer to Some absolute deadline where this had to be done by?
Who you gonna call
