Re: Eddie Honda's wheels of steel (and occasionally alloy)
Well been doing a few miles this week.
Glasgow, Carlisle, Stirling, Dundee, Montrose...
Back to Stirling, parked next to some modern tosh.
Drumnadrochit
And on towards Inverness
Up to Inverness and back down to Stirling via Aviemore. Today to Crianlarich and caught a train.
However the unknown stereo with no RDS had to be sacked off. The windscreen DAB aerial was calling me. Had a look in Halfords today and in amongst their depleted display was a mechless Pioneer for 80 quid. However after enquiring, they had none in stock, but brought out a boxed ex-display Kenwood KDC-BT720DAB, the one with superfluous CD player. "£69". Sod it, I'll take it.

I'm back in Ireland, but in the extremely unlikely event that any of you should meet 'er indoors, I would like to make it clear that for the purposes of marital harmony that I was kindly lent the Jaaag by my friend Tommy for the duration.

Re: Eddie Honda's wheels of steel (and occasionally alloy)
After pulling that from the dash and before sticking in the Chef, I had a quick dabble with the old Sony XR-C5120R that was given to me by Chancer..
He did say it powers up, but the display is gone. However, he's a big cunting liar! The display IS there, just very dim.
Whip out the five screws on the back. Then carefully run my thumbnail round the seam and separate the halves.
Other models served by this circuit board.
The D bass know is easy enough to pull off, but be careful with the orientation it passes through a couple of slots in the face plate.
Harder is the Source button and dial, but given patience and care can be prised off.
And before you know it, you have a pile of quality used spares on the kitchen table.
Now the reason for the dim display is that there is an incandescent bulb backlight at either end of the display

Re: Eddie Honda's wheels of steel (and occasionally alloy)
Look at the service manual for any clues to the spec...
Nope, doesn't help much Googling that. However from past experience of yesteryear hi-fi it'll just be 5mm grain bulbs that were used loads for that lovely glow round switches in the past before the world went LED mental.
They're a bit of task to change mind, the surround to the LCD has to be desoldered so the tabs holding it to the board can be released, but it's not difficult, just a bit long-winded.
As I had everything out, I thought I'd throw a tape in, however the first one that came to hand was broken. I've a bag of tapes somewhere, but can't find them, so the next thing I stumbled across was this...

Oh, thanks.
Now I'm going to have sodding "Agadoo" going round my head all afternoon.
You bastard.
(Great stereo btw, I've got one of those Sony XR-C5120Rs and I love it)

Re: Eddie Honda's wheels of steel (and occasionally alloy)
pukka original tape of "Party Party" (I think my late mother bought it yonks ago)
The first tape I could lay my hands on needs resplicing...(FHM April 1995 freebie)
If you find the display is dim either end, it'll be those bulb(s) blown. Desolder the six tabs holding the LCD in and straighten the tabs for removal. Keep all the elements in order.
The bulbs are hiding under the light diffuser.

Re: Eddie Honda's wheels of steel (and occasionally alloy)
Yup. IIRC Tickman had a Pioneer DAB in it as the DAB aerial was begging to be used. Someone else had a fancy Kenwood I think in it. Fat_Pirate took the Jag system out way back when.
It seems that bangin' choons were way up the priority list rather than sorting out the tapping leprechaun in the boot

Re: Eddie Honda's wheels of steel (and occasionally alloy)
Yeah the Pioneer dab unit stopped working with me so I fitted a Bluetooth head unit, which was used to mask the tappitty tap tap noises!
I did fit some exhaust bits in my defence
