Cheers guys. I had to make it mechanically fit (hub oil seal, replacement gearbox first major outing, repair head gasket and blown water pump etc). I will carefully remove the cable ties to use again, hence no snippage.

Yesterday was unfortunately the last Lancashire Automobile Club Manchester to Blackpool run. I worked flat out on my station wagon to get it ready for the rally and am pleased to say it completed without issue. It was a great run and a real shame it had to be the last. Could try injecting butyl-rubber screenseal under the rubber when it's thoroughly dry underneath, but if that fails to stem the leak it's a windscreen out job.

Yes of course it matters. The seal should be pressed in as far as it will go. How else would it seal?
