I've nearly been hit by badly driven cop cars as they are too busy playing with the radio mic on their shoulder to drive a few times.

You're right about the switching.
If it's three pole then typically it'll be
In - feed from main beam
Out - to relay
In - from perm or ignition switched live
I had rooflights like that on my Disco years ago and used them as work lights when needed

It was quite nice in January though, must be hell in the summer.
